Artemis Mission: The Next Giant Leap for Mankind

“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

We are again taking chills during NASA’s development of the Artemis Program. The Artemis program is a new crewed spaceflight program of the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to return humans to the Moon by 2024. The program is named after the Greek goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, childbirth, and protectress of girls, who was also associated with the Moon.

The Artemis program is a collaboration of NASA and its international partners, including the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).

The last time humans landed on the moon was Apollo 17 Mission- December 19, 1972. So far 12 humans have been to space. This time NASA will put the first Woman and first person of color on the moon. So far only men have been to the moon.

Components of Artemis

Artemis Base Camp on the surface of the moon and the Gateway in lunar orbit. These elements will allow robots and astronauts to explore more and conduct more science than ever before.

  • Orion Spacecraft -will carry astronauts from Earth to lunar orbit and back.
  • Space Launch System Rocket (SLS) – Upon launch, the SLS will be the most powerful rocket in the world.
  • Exploration Ground System – The structures on the ground necessary to support the launch and recovery of returning astronauts.
  • Gateway – Gateway will remain in orbit for more than a decade, providing a place to live and work, and supporting long-term science and human exploration on and around the Moon.
  • Human Landing System – the final mode of transportation that will take astronauts from lunar orbit to the surface and back to orbit.
  • Artemis Base Camp – To give astronauts a place to live and work on the moon, the Artemis Base Camp concept includes a modern lunar cabin, a rover, and a mobile home.

Mission Patches

  • Artemis I will be an uncrewed flight test of the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft around the Moon.
  • Artemis II will be the first crewed flight test of the Space Launch System and the Orion spacecraft around the Moon.
  • Artemis III will be a crewed mission to land on the Moon. The mission is scheduled to launch in 2025.

The Artemis program is a bold and ambitious undertaking, but it is one that has the potential to revolutionize space exploration. The program will help to return humans to the Moon, and it will lay the groundwork for future missions to Mars.
